Builder Tip #44 from HomebuiltHELP
Using NPT Fittings in your Homebuilt
We can almost guarantee you will need to deal with an NPT fitting on your homebuilt before your project is finished!

Nearly every device on your homebuilt aircraft that touches fuel or brake fluid will require a fitting for attaching hoses or rigid lines to them. These fittings need to be sized properly and installed correctly. The NPT standard (National Pipe Thread taper) determines the criteria you need to know for selecting the proper size.

In this short video, we will convey the basic knowledge of this thread standard so you can feel confident in selecting the correct fittings and order the right sizes from your aviation parts supplier. The video shows how to properly determine the existing size of a fitting - NOT an intuitive procedure if you are new to these items!

Planning a Fuel System in your home built aircraft?!

An examination of NPT fittings is just one example of the many details we need to feel comfortable about when assembling our aircraft fuel system.

Our instructional DVD: Fuel System Plumbing explains the components and demonstrates the skills needed for plumbing a fuel system for your homebuilt aircraft.

You can build the best fuel system for your aircraft only when you feel comfortable understanding all of the options involved with its construction: flare fittings, rubber hoses, rigid tubing, sealants, and more! These options require appropriate skills for implementation: bending, flaring, cutting, deburring, etc. Our DVD was tailored for the beginning aircraft builder who has little or no experience with these important issues that are often left unexplained by engine and kit manufacturers. Visit the web page for more details of this valuable instructional DVD.
